Signal conditioning (signal adaption)...
...in the broadest sense is the adaptation of signals of an application to the input ranges of a measuring system. The measurement system can be an instrument, a PC DAQ card or any other measurement device. The signals of an application come to an essential part from sensors of all kinds. These sensors usually provide small, non-linearized voltages. The inputs of measuring systems, however, usually have standard ranges like 0...5 V, ±5 V, 0...10 V, or ±10 V. The task of signal conditioning is to "translate" the sensor signals to these standard ranges. Also the implementation for a transmission via 0...20 mA current loop is included here. Additional functions like a galvanic isolation, triggering of alarms or signal operations supplement the conversion. Vice versa, this also affects the adaptation of the output signals of a controlling unit to the signal levels of the application or actuators.
The signal conditioning product range at Meilhaus Electronic includes modules with these basic functions (often in combination):
Measurement amplifiers, transformers, transducers: Conversion, amplification (possibly including linearization) of the sensor signals into standard signals, which are acquired and processed by a measuring systems.
Transmitters: Conversion of the sensitive sensor signals to standard signals, for example 0...20 mA current loop for transmission over slightly larger distances.
Isolators: Galvanic isolation of the signal path, for example for increased safety against overvoltages, voltage peaks.
Signal splitters: Splitting of a signal into 2 signal outputs.
Alarm modules: Trigger an alarm, for example switching a relay when a condition is met. This can be the case, if the signal at the input exceeds a certain threshold etc.
Math/computing modules: Mathematical signal operations like for example output of a sum of two input signals.
Commonly used designs are compact enclosures for DIN rail mounting or quasi-industrial standards such as 5B, 8B and others.
