Icron Raven 3124 - 4-Port USB 3.1 Point-to-Point Extender System via 200 m Multimode Fiber
The Icron USB 3-2-1 Raven 3124 is an USB 3.1 Gen 1 (5 Gbps) extender with ExtremeUSB-C technology. It extends all USB 3.1, 2.0 and 1.1 devices simultaneously up to 200 m over standard multimode fiber cable. The fiber link cable provides isolation which may be needed for medical or military equipment. The system includes a local extender (LEX) and remote extender (REX), both powered by an external power supply adaptor (included). The REX has an integrated four port USB hub which is compatible with USB 3.1, 2.0, and 1.1. The Raven 3124 is fully transparent and works with Windows, Mac OS, Linux, and Chrome OS.

Frequently asked questions:
Question: Why USB extension over fiber optic cable?
Answer: The Icron USB extensions consist of
- LEX (local extender connected with short USB cable to host PC/laptop) and
- REX (remote extender for the connected USB devices).
Depending on the model, commercially available Ethernet Cat copper cable or fiber optic patch cable are used for the long connection between LEX and REX. Fiber optic cables have several advantages:
- They provide complete galvanic isolation between the transmitting and receiving ends, so potential differences are irrelevant.
- They are insensitive to electromagnetic interference, e.g. from switching operations, motors, etc. (EMC immunity).
- They do not cause any electromagnetic interference themselves (EMC-neutral).
- They transmit very high data rates with very low attenuation.
Depending on the application, these features can be a decision criterion.
Question: To what distance can USB be extended with fiber optic cable?
Answer: This depends on the Icron model used. The largest distance can be bridged by the Ranger 2344. It works with singlemode fiber optic cable and the distance can be up to 10 km. With the Ranger 2324, up to 500 m over multimode fiber is possible. Both models are designed for USB 2.0. For USB 3.0, up to 200 m (multimode cable) is possible with the Icron Raven models.
Question: Do I need to be familiar with fiber optic transmission technology, splicing etc. to use the Icron USB extenders?
Answer: No, this is not necessary. Simply connect the LEX (local extender) to your PC or laptop with a short USB cable. Place the REX (remote extender) where it is needed, for example at a more distant surveillance camera, which you connect to the REX also via short USB cable. Depending on the model, now connect the power supply(s) of LEX and/or REX. Connect LEX and REX with standard fiber optic cable (not included in the scope of delivery, in case of doubt we will help you to choose the right cable). This is very easy and using standardized connectors. Done. When laying the fiber optic cable, follow the relevant instructions (for example, avoid tight bending radii that could break the fiber).
