Probes - the "Fingertips" of your Oscilloscope
Probes enable you to transmit signals from a test object/measurement point to the oscilloscope accurately and without interference. High-quality probes ensure that this first link in your measurement chain works precisely, reliably, and safely. They ensure optimal adaptation to your oscilloscope.
Overview: Common Types of Oscilloscope Probes
Probe type | Application | Principle | External power supply |
Passive | Simple standard measurements | Compensated voltage divider | Not required |
Active | Measurement of high-frequency signals and fast digital signals with low amplitude. Significantly lower input capacitance/high input impedance than passive probes | Integrated active amplifier | Required |
Differential | Measurement of signals with high frequency, low amplitude, or large common-mode voltages | Mostly active with differential amplifier; picks up two input signals and calculates their difference (voltage difference between two measuring points, instead of voltage against a common ground); no fixed ground connection required | Mostly required, active |
High voltage | Measuring high voltages | Precision voltage divider | Required if active |
Isolated | Isolation between oscilloscope and measurement object, floating measurements, high CMRR; e.g., inverters, SiC/GaN, power electronics | A complete digitizer channel is "outsourced" to the probe and connected to the oscilloscope via fiber optic cable | Required |
Current | Current measurement (waveforms of a current signal, level, long-term recordings) | Transformer principle (AC) or Hall sensors (DC) ▸Current probes/sensors |
Depending on the design |
Many oscilloscopes have additional connections for probe detection on the BNC input sockets. Using contact pin coding, compatible probe models are able to tell the oscilloscope which division is connected. The oscilloscope and probes used must be from the same manufacturer or be compatible. Of course, other probes can also be used with BNC only, but they will not benefit from this additional convenience.
