Benefits of the CMT OTA Test System with Chamber, VNA, and Extender

  • Smaller footprint for anechoic antenna tests.
  • Measure up to 235 cm far field measurements.
  • Complete system with chamber, VNA, and extender.

Copper Mountain OTA Antenna Test System

The Copper Mountain OTA test system is a low-cost, space-saving solution ideal for antenna testing applications across 5G, automotive radar, aerospace, satellite communication, and similar industries. The bundle is designet to make far-field and sub-THz antenna measurements above 18 GHz. The over-the-air (OTA) antenna test system features a wide array of configurations depending on the user's far-field requirements, antenna size, desired frequency range, and antenna positioner functionality.

Chamber and Gimbal

Each OTA bundle features a benchtop compact anechoic chamber, suitable to make measurements from 18 GHz to 54 GHz. Turn-key chamber system for measuring 5G or mmWave antennas:

  • OTA-2S-54 (2 cubes) = 72 cm.
  • OTA-3S-54 (3 cubes) = 133 cm.
  • OTA-4S-54 (4 cubes) = 193 cm.

Each system includes a 3D antenna positioner (gimbal), sophisticated but intuitive measurement software, and other necessary accessories to fully set up a chamber for far-field antenna measurements.

VNA and Extender

The measurement system is anchored by CMT's 2-port 9 GHz ▸Cobalt VNA and includes a set of ▸CobaltFx FET1854 frequency extender modules for 18...54 GHz.

  • Coaxial band from 18 - 54 GHz.
  • Waveguides bands of
    • WR-15 (50 - 75 GHz).
    • WR-12 (60 - 90 GHz).
    • WR-10 (75 - 110 GHz).
    • WR-8 (90 - 140 GHz).
    • WR-6 (110 - 170 GHz).
    • WR-5 (150 - 220  GHz).

Frequently Asked Questions:

Question: What is a "gimbal"?

Answer: The term gimbal originally comes from film production, but is now also used in other contexts. "A gimbal is a pivoted support that permits rotation of an object about an axis." (Wikipedia entry "Gimbal", as of 3/2024). It uses motorized cardanic suspension that is intended to make the movements of an optical device, usually a film camera, smoother and less jerky. In the application of the OTA test system, it allows the controlled alignment of the antenna inside the anechoic chamber.

Question: Why should I consider the OTA test sytem?

Answer: Traditional anechoic chambers are room sized and very expensive, as they have to be heavily shielded for high and low frequencies. If extensive testing is required, engineers can book chambers. This is expensive, too, complex, and dictates the time frame for tests - especially if tests have to be repeated after improvements or even redesigns. Compared to this, the CMT OTA solution is small and relatively inexpensive. It is a turn-key solution with a smaller chamber, VNA, extenders, and software which drives the antenna positioners and acquires measurements from the VNA.
