The HIOKI LR8450(-01) series are portable modular dataloggers at max. 1 kS/s (1 ms) for voltage, strain, temperature, humidity, resistance and CAN. The loggers consist of the main device with user interface (buttons, display etc.) and the I/O modules. The LR8450 is the standard model designed for use with plug-in modules only. The LR8450-01 is the wireless version for additional WLAN modules. This modular design allows very flexible and cost effective logging applications in automotive, industrial and other fields, also with distributed I/O through the wireless I/O modules (LR8450-01).

Question: For the HIOKI data logger LR8450, there are modules available for different temperature sensors. When to use which model?

Answer: Sensor types: The choice primarily depends on the sensors you are using. Thermocouples (various types such as J, K, T, E, R, S, B, N) are commonly used in industrial processes, combustion systems, aerospace testing, etc. They offer wide temperature ranges up to thousands of °C, are fast, and cost-effective. However, compared to other sensor types, their accuracy is lower.
RTDs (types such as Pt100, Pt1000) are more expensive and slower, but very accurate and offer high long-term stability. Therefore, they are mostly used in climate chambers, calibration laboratories, process control, etc.
Thermistors (NTC, PTC – negative or positive temperature coefficient) are fast and inexpensive, but have a comparatively limited temperature range. They are commonly used in consumer electronics/household applications, EV batteries, car engines, air conditioning systems, etc.

Spatial arrangement: The HIOKI I/O modules of the U series are attached directly to the base data logger, while the modules of the LR series are connected wirelessly to the base data logger. For widely distributed measurement setups, the LR modules offer several advantages: placing the I/O modules close to the measurement points ensures short sensor leads, resulting in less susceptibility to interference, reduced noise, and improved accuracy. Distributing I/O modules across different measurement locations is very convenient. In battery operation, complete autonomy can be achieved.

Additional measurements (if required): Depending on the variant, the I/O modules also support other measurement parameters: voltage (0...100 V), resistance, humidity, 4…20 mA, and heat flow.
