The use of measurement, control and testing techniques in the automotive sector is manifold and plays an important role in all phases of a vehicle's life. Starting with development, through production, quality assurance, conformity and safety testing, later workshop/repair and finally recycling. Of course, an important aspect is whether the vehicle is a private passenger car or a commercial vehicle, and whether the latter in turn is designed for passenger transportation, agriculture, (heavy) transport, etc. And a distinction must also be made between drive/motor technologies ranging from the classic internal combustion engine to hybrid drives and electric motors.

Bosch µLC Test System

In the HiL process (Hardware-in-the-Loop), a real environment is simulated for the development and testing of a control system. For example, for the development and test of an automotive engine control system, the car or its engine can be simulated using a model. The process is not limited to automotive technology. HiL technology can also be used for control development in other areas such as embedded, power electronics, consumer electronics, mechanical and plant engineering. The advantage is that the simulated unit to be controlled does not yet have to be present - for example, if it is still under development itself or if initial tests on the unit would be too dangerous or too costly.

In principle, the HiL simulator is a computer system with an I/O unit. It simulates the behavior of an environment by receiving and delivering data via interfaces as well as analog and digital input/output channels, just as sensors/actuators would do in the real environment. The computer system works with necessarily very individual system architectures and software models (often with Matlab).

The Bosch µLC Test System, with its hardware module, provides the I/O part for a HiL system, while additionally offloading the PC by also running some of the control processes directly in the device. The module is connected to a PC/laptop via USB.

Via its interfaces and I/O channels, the µLC Test System is connected to the control unit under test. It supports the CAN/CAN-FD, LIN and SENT interfaces commonly used in the automotive sector. In addition, there are 12 analog outputs (8x 10 bit/4x 12 bit, 0...5 V/5 mA) and 6 analog inputs (12 bit, 0...40 V). For controlling switching operations, 6 digital outputs and 2 relay channels are available. These channels are supplemented by 2 PWM inputs and 4 PWM outputs (Pulse Width Modulation). Especially for automotive use, speed, throttle and cylinder pressure simulations are possible with the µLC Test System.

Power supplies and loads have to be simulated and the behavior of batteries analyzed (charge/discharge curves, temperature behavior and much more). Scopecorder

In the Field and on the Test Bench

Yokogawa ScopeCorder DL350

The Yokogawa ScopeCorder DL350 combines the functions of an oscilloscope for recording transient signals with the long-term data logging capabilities of a data recorder. The DL350 is a portable instrument not only for "quick and easy" troubleshooting, but also for recording a wide variety of signals. It is modular and designed primarily for field use, although it offers the functionality of a bench-top unit. The sampling clock, trigger and start/stop control are all available as external signals. For example, the signals from a rotary encoder or a protractor can serve as the sampling clock for analyzing motor speed and power.
