Keysight E36731 Bench Battery Emulator

The Keysight E36731A battery emulator is a complete hardware and software solution, providing multiple functionalities in one instrument. It performs the four important measurement and test tasks of modern battery technology: Battery profiling, battery emulation, battery cycling, and the features of a power supply and electronic load in one box. For battery profiling, emulation and cycling, the hardware is combined with the BenchVue BV9211B/BV9210B software.

Question: What is battery profiling, emulation and cycling?

Answer: The Keysight E36731A combines the functions of a power supply and an electronic load in one device. For battery testing, this means that a battery can be charged in a controlled manner with the power supply function as well as discharged in a controlled manner with the load function. The E36731A uses this feature for three important tests/analyses on batteries: Profiling generates the battery's specific descriptive profile in the form of a charge and discharge curve by charging/discharging the battery. Emulation simulates a battery for an electronic consumer based on its charge/discharge curve created by profiling. In a cycling test, the battery repeatedly goes through charge and discharge cycles. In this way, capacity loss and the shortening of battery life due to charging/discharging in later "real life" can be simulated. .

Question: Why emulation of batteries?

Answer: To emulate a battery means to simulate it through the E36731A. A reason for this simulation can be most simply that the battery is not available for the test of a DUT that is powered by the battery just for some reason. The test also becomes more repeatable by using a simulation instead of the "real battery" and it can shorten the test time. This is because the emulation always creates the exact same initial and test conditions. Thus, different states of charge and other conditions, such as low or high temperatures on the "real battery" can be simulated quickly and without much effort.

Question: Can the E36731A also measure temperatures?

Answer: The E36731A provides battery profiling, emulation and cycle testing. Additional temperature acquisition is possible by adding a ▸DAQ970A/DAQ973A data acquisition system. The BenchVue PathWave BV9210/11B software thus also supports battery profiling with temperature monitoring.
