The PicoScope 9300 series are extremely compact PC sampling oscilloscopes up to 20 or 30 GHz for USB and Ethernet/LAN. The sampling oscilloscopes have equivalent sampling rates of up to 15 TS/s for special applications with repetitive signals. Special features depending on model variant (see table below): Optical inputs (integrated opto-electronic converter), clock recovery trigger, integrated TDR/TDT system (time domain reflectometry). The devices are the replacements for the PicoScope 9200 series (PicoScope 9201A, 9211A, 9231A).

Question: What is the difference between a sampling oscilloscope and a "traditional" oscilloscope?

Answer: The PicoScope 9300 Series sampling oscilloscopes work with triggered sequential sampling. They can capture repetitive or clock-derived high-bandwidth signals without the expense or jitter of a very high-speed clocked sampling system in a real-time oscilloscope. The bandwidth of 20 or 30 GHz enables measurement of 12-ps transitions, and low sampling jitter allows timing resolution down to 64 fs. Sequential sampling rate of 1 MS/s enables rapid building of waveforms, eye diagrams and histograms. Real-time oscilloscopes on the other hand sample the whole waveform in a single acquisition. They are ideal for transient, non-repetitive signals.

Question: What is TDR?

Answer: TDR stands for Time Domain Reflectometry. TDR is a technique to determin lengths and reflection characteristics of electromagnetic waves and signals. TDR can be thought of as a kind of radar (hence the term "cable radar"): A pulse or step function is sent into a medium (for example, a cable). Reflections caused by properties and changes in the medium (in the cable example: Bends, crimps, bad connector contacts, etc.) are scanned over time. The shape of the reflection is displayed graphically, linked in time to the emitted pulse. Applications include cable testing, length measurements, moisture, conductivity and level measurements in geology, material testing, etc.

Question: Do the PicoScope 9300 sampling oscilloscopes work with PicoScope6 software?

Answer: No, the PicoScope 9300 series works with the PicoSample software tailored for these instruments. It provides high-resolution cursor and automatic waveform measurement with statistics, waveform processing incl. FFT, time and voltage histograms, eye diagrams for NRZ and RZ as well as automatic mask test.
